Working Backwards

*This post was originally sent as an email.

At some point along the way I got your email address, whether it was in 2017 when we quit our jobs, 2018 when we moved across the country, 2020 when we started the Covid book club, or 2021 when we were going viral on TikTok.

But since 2022 we really haven’t been online like we were.

We celebrated our 5 year mark as a business in 2022.

There was a new level of existence: all of the striving and building had created the reality we had always envisioned. We had time for our kids, profits as a business, and clients we loved working with.

We naturally paused, exhaled, and relaxed.

Then we started working backwards.

“What do we want to be true when we are 45?”

That was the question we started asking, realizing that our son was about to turn 10. We felt incredibly present for those 10 years while still acknowledging, that went by really quick.

We had really good firsthand data from the last 10 years as a family and the last 20 as a couple, dating all the way back to when we were 16.

What do we want to talk about now?

Our story has been fragmented, most of that by design.

When you used to be a pastor, then a professional kayak fisherman, then move across the country, go viral on TikTok, while raising two kids, homeschooling, and running your business with your wife, well….

You only make content or communicate about what’s relevant.

Our life is multi-faceted, and pausing online allowed all of our pursuits to come to one point, to a landing place where all the dust could settle.

We are starting over with the whole story.

TikTok opened this door, and we slowly walked through it and shared a glimpse into our relationship.

But we want to talk about our time as pastors, about religion and theology; we miss talking about it.

We like talking about the topic of religion, the same way we enjoy talking about dirt bikes and business ideas.

Our conversations with our kids include our entire story: my kids talk to me about God, Minecraft, Taylor Swift, tennis, business, their current crushes, etc.

We want our podcast, our content, our offline and online conversations to come from the same place.

Staying Connected

One thing that is clear to us over the last 10 years of building online is the importance of connecting with people directly and having a way to connect outside of algorithms.

Our desire is to create content for builders, risk takers, parents, and creatives, for people exploring frontiers and trying new things.

Religion, entrepreneurship, and tech are the main topics we have in our real life, and for the next ten years those are the conversations we want to have online as well.

We are past the follower phase of content and want to create and connect with people who are having similar conversations.

If this is you, we would love for you to subscribe to our podcast or newsletter.

Josh recently recorded an initial podcast discussing his time as a pastor. You can listen to it on Apple or Spotify.

Thank you for your time and connection,
